Church of St.Agatha

The Church Badia of St. Agatha is one of the most beautiful buildings in Catania and is the result of the late baroque rebuilding after the earthquake in 1693.
The project was entrusted to the young architect of Palermo Vaccarini, who returned from a period in Rome, got inspiration from the great and flourishing city and decided to mix the classical Roman architecture and the shapes of the late Baroque tradition.
The inside parts were completed by Nicolò Daniele, who made the refined dark and white Carrara marble floors and the altars with the yellow Castronovo marble. The church was closed for more than 20 years after the earthquake of 1990 and was opened again in 2012, after a two-years renovation.

Accessibility

The main entrance has obstacles, so the site is not accessible for people with reduced mobility. Maintenance works are forecast, for the installation of an elevator that will make fully accessible the terrace of the church. The main nave has only one floor. Leaflets and guided tours are available on request.
