Church Of Santa Maria Of Betlem

The church of Santa Maria of Betlem is one of three ancient collegiates of Modica (from 1645) and it dates back to the fourteenth century. The façade is of the Renaissance period in its first order (late sixteenth century), designed by the architect Corrado Rubino from Noto in 1571, it was rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake and completed between 1816 and 1821 in its second order with a neoclassical style. The bell tower was built in 1897 by the master builder Giuseppe Garofalo Giannone from Modica. Inside, there is a very valuable Palatine Chapel, also called Chapel Cabrera (1474-1520, a National Monument), in late Gothic style, which survived the 1693 earthquake and was embedded in the new eighteenth-century architecture.
The church is open from 4.30 p.m. to 7 p.m.; for information call the number +39 0932 941 470.
