Civic Museum Ursino Castle

Ursino Castle is a large building complex built by Frederick II of Swabia. It was built between 1239 and 1250 on the foundations of a Norman fortress.
The building has a square plan, four cylindrical big towers at the corners (30 meters high) and semi-cylindrical towers in the middle of each side: the rigid geometric pattern is typical of the rationalism of the Swabian architecture.
Today the castle houses the civic museum with relics of the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Modern era. Moreover, in the rooms of the ground floor it houses a rich heritage of donations, artworks coming from churches and convents and archaeological materials found during the excavations of Catania.
The museum is open all year, except for Christmas and on the 1st of May; it is open from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The ticket price is 6€ (reduced-price 3€). Online reservations available.
