The island has been an important center for the trade of the refined obsidian since ancient times and is today one of the major points of reference for studying the different Mediterranean civilizations; the area where the huge castle is located – a natural spur on the Diana coasts – has always been a natural refuge for the inhabitants of the island since the Neolithic Age. The unique geographical position and the different dominations over the centuries (the Sicilians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Normans and the Aragon) has enabled the creation of a real archaeological park that includes the main Aeolian sites, which all witness the smooth passage of different cultures and dominations over the centuries
