Modica

The date of the first settlement is attested to the 3rd century BC. The town of Modica was destroyed by the earthquake of 1693 and rebuilt in the same place, according to the original medieval urban structure, with religious and civilian buildings.
The network of narrow medieval alleys and the series of churches and noble palaces are typical of the town, with refined architectures, rich decorations and single-color limestones carved by the talent of sculptural workers, which recall the network of dry stone walls typical of the Hyblean countryside.
In Modica there are three museums. The two cathedrals of St. George (on the top area) and St. Peter (at the bottom) are the main lines of the urban structure, which includes the huge convents of the Franciscans, the Jesuits, the Benedictines etc. The Baroque itinerary includes churches and monasteries from the beautiful natural balcony of the Pizzo to the valley floor of the Streat.
