Noto

Thanks to the size of the territory, there are many cultural and archaeological sites of particular value.
A part of the artistic heritage is collected in the Archaeological Museum with findings from the ancient Noto destroyed by the earthquake of 1693. It is located along the main street but it is currently closed to the public for renovations.
There are also nine archaeological sites. Besides the ruins of the ancient Noto, abandoned after the 1693 earthquake, there is the prehistoric village of Castelluccio of the 15th and 17th century BC, from which the famous archaeologist Paolo Orsi called the Sicilian cultural period “Civilization of Castelluccio”. In the limestone of the near caves, there are about 200 artificial box-shaped tombs with a small anteroom and an open vestibule.
The historical, artistic and architectural heritage shows all its potential for the creation of historical and baroque thematic routes, with the possibility of alternative archaeological and landscape routes based on the ancient history.
