Pantalica

Pantalica is an archeological and natural area located on a upland of the Hyblaean Mountains. In the first half of the thirteenth century BC it was the refuge for the indigenous population, who fled from the coasts to defend themselves from the arrival of the Italic peoples. The necropolis dates back to this period and it features 5000 tombs carved into the natural rock. Later, in the Middle Ages the site was used again as a refuge for local people, who underwent enemy invasions; according to some sources it was inhabited even after the arrival of the Normans and Arabs.
The natural scenery that surrounds Pantalica contributes to its beauty and various examples of plants and animal species can be observed there.
