Salina

The island of Salina is located to the northwest of Lipari. It is the second largest island in the Aeolian archipelago and also the most “green”.
In ancient times the island was called “Didyme” (twins), because it features two mounts, “Fossa delle Felci” and “Monte dei Porri”, which are linked by the “Valdichiesa” Valley, where the “Sanctuary Madonna del Terzito” is located. The current name comes from a salty lake at “Punta Lingua”, which once was used for the extraction of sea salt.
In the island there are three villages: Santa Marina Salina, on the east coast; Leni, on the hills and Malfa, placed on a hill in the northern coast. In Salina, at Portella district there are the remains of a village, where a guided tour is now available, with rounded huts that maybe were destroyed by a fire. At Punta Lingua there are the ruins of the structure of Salina during the Roman period and in the Saracen cave there are niches and an altar used for worship, probably dating back to the 3rd century A.C. In other areas in the island, during some excavations thermal baths of the first imperial age and an ancient necropolis have been discovered.
