St. John the Baptist Cathedral

Since 2002 the value and beauty of St. John the Baptist Cathedral and 17 other monuments of the city of Ragusa have been acknowledged by the inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. At the beginning there was just a hut; since 1694 a small temporary church for celebrations has been built, probably with a different positioning from the current church; in 1741 it was demolished and it was all moved to the new church, built since 1718.
Until now the author of the amazing monument is not definite, but probably he has been influenced by local artists. As it happened for Rosario Gagliardi who started his career as an artisan, but he’s now defined as the talented architect who built Noto and the Vallo after a period of study and training, the artists, while depending from architects, might have become independent thanks to their experience as lapidum incisores or foreman. Many times, from being simple engravers, builders or creators of refined buildings, they became excellent designers with skills hidden until then.
The cathedral is open all year, from 8 a.m. to 12.30 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free.
INFO: The Cathedral has a priority entry, with a very visible sign for visitors. It has ten parking spaces reserved for the disabled in the parking area near the entrance. A priority queue for visitors with reduced mobility is provided and there is a reception area with counter and equipment (ex. stands) at a height suitable to visitors in wheelchairs. Information is provided through maps and leaflets.
