Syracuse

Syracuse is the cradle of the Baroque period and with its rich and diverse cultural heritage is one of the biggest and most fascinating towns in Sicily. The peculiar features of Syracuse is definitely the island of Ortygia: the urban core originally developed on the island, which is now connected to the mainland by the Ponte Nuovo, then over the centuries it expanded to the close promontory of Plemmirio.
The succession of cultures and families has left its mark not only in the culture, the farming techniques, the trade, but also in architecture and monuments. However, many monuments did not survive the earthquake in 1693 and were rebuilt in the style of south-eastern Sicily, which is the Baroque.
