The Cathedral Maria SS. delle Vittorie

Located in the highest part of the city, the Cathedral of Piazza Armerina was built in the 17-18th century on the ruins of the main Church which was destroyed by the earthquake. The sole original element is the bell tower where the late 16th century architecture mixed its rigidity to the softness of the baroque art. The main façade with 2 orders of lesenes (pilaster strips) features a front door with 6 columns on the lower level and a big window on the main level. The whole building is topped by a large dome that is higher than 70 m and has a diameter of about 14 m.
