The Cathedral Of St George

Amazing example of the baroque buildings of the Hyblean are, the Cathedral of St. George is huge and overlooks a staircase with 250 steps. Built on Count Ruggero II request in 1090, it is the result of successive reconstructions, occurred because of the earthquakes of 1542, 1613 and 1693. It was ended only in 1738.
The interior has five naves and is lavishly decorated with 22 columns with Corinthians capitals, it features remarkable artworks: a beautiful sixteenth-century altarpiece by Girolamo Alibrandi, ancient refined paintings, a huge organ and an impressive sundial. The treasure of the church hosts the Holy Ark, a silver artwork with the memorabilia of the Saint.

Accessibility
The main entrance features a steep staircase which impedes the access to people with reduced mobility. A side entrance is available and it can be reached by car. It has 3 steps and no ramps.
