The Germplasm Trail

In the Etna National Park there are several trails passing throughout old or recent lava flows or wooden areas thanks to which it is possible to appreciate the importance of preserving ecosystems and habitat of such a rare beauty.
That is why the Germplasm Bank was created: it a collection field for the characterization and conservation of Etna vegetation genetic heritage. The trail is called Germplasm Trail or Trail of the 5 senses and allows the access to a natural heritage for all (in particular, for people with reduced mobility and blind people). Located near the ancient Monastery of San Nicola La Rena, in Nicolosi, that is headquarter of the Park Authority, the Bank hosts some species of natural and agricultural interest (vineyards, orchards and others), but also herbs, spices and medicinal species. The trail includes a unique environment and is 1153 meters long, where there are information plaques about the environment, also for partially-sighted and blind people.

Accessibility
The Germplasm Trail has an inclination under 7% and a path that allows the transit also to people with reduced mobility. Along the trail, some Braille explanatory plaques for visually impaired and blind people have been installed with information about the environment. Rest areas along the trail and accessible toilettes at the entrance are available.
