The Maniace Castle

The Maniace castle was built between 1232 and 1240 by Frederick II. It is located at the end of Ortygia and its strategic position ensured the control of the port. It has a rectangular plan and is surrounded by huge walls with four towers at the corners. It was used as a military fortress and was surrounded by a moat which was accessible through a drawbridge first and then through a stone bridge. Beyond the decorated gate which contrasts with the rigor of the architecture, there is a large courtyard. Ruined by the passing of time, it has been recently restored and opened to the public.
