Mount Etna was listed among UNESCO sites on the 21st of June 2013, during the 37th annual meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which took place in Cambodia, on the basis of the following criteria

The UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Mount Etna (19 237 ha) includes the most highly protected area of Mount Etna and scientifically important and is part of the Regional Natural Park Etna Park. Etna is one of the volcanoes active and famous of the world and an outstanding example of geological processes in progress and volcanic formations. At least 2,700 years of its eruptive history has been documented and the almost continuous eruptive activity of Mount Etna continues to influence volcanology, geophysics and other Earth science disciplines.
