The Roman Amphitheatre

The Roman Amphitheatre in Catania is located in the center of the Via Stesicoro square and it can be considered as one of the greatest theaters of the Roman period. According to the archaeology studies it could host up to 15,000 spectators and its size was suitable all kinds of show, from the fights between gladiators to the naval combats, thanks to hydraulic systems that enabled to transform the arena into a pool.
The building was made with Etna lava stone covered with marble; today only the arena and the lower order of the arches are visible; the other parts of the building are totally covered by the urban fabric.
